80% of All Smartphones Run Android According to Latest Statistics

Google’s smartphone operating system Android is on its way to take over the smartphone world. According to the latest report from Strategy Analytics, 80% of all the smartphones in this world run Android. This a record as none of the mobile operating system has dominated the smartphone world like this before.

“Global smartphone shipments grew 47 percent annually from 156.5 million units in Q2 2012 to 229.6 million in Q2 2013. Growth was driven by strong demand for Android models across all price-tiers in developed and developing markets, such as the US, China and Brazil. Android now accounts for an impressive 8 in 10 of all smartphones shipped on the planet.” said Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst with the company.

Last year android had a 70% of market share according to the same source. While Android teams are celeberating, there are always some company lose on the other side. This time the major drop in the market share was taken by Apple’s iOS. The market share of iOS has dropped down to a 14% which is a the lowest number for them since 2010. Even Windows Phone has an increased market share this year. 4% of all the smartphones run on Windows Phone os according to this same report which shows Apple has a lot to do to regain its position in the smartphone market. Hopefully the iOS 7 and the low budget versions of iPhone will boost the market share.

Anyway the analysts says Windows Phone might not be seeing an increased percentage any time soon unless they come up with improvements in 2 key areas.

“First, the license fee charged to smartphone makers for WP8 must be more competitive to compete with Android in lower price-bands. And second, Microsoft must dramatically accelerate its support for advanced technologies, such as octo-core chipsets, because WP8 continues to lag behind Android in the premium smartphone category”, commented Linda Sui.

I am obviously happy for android, but I am not sure about android dominating the smartphone world as this could seriously reduce the number of options we have while selecting a operating system. For now lets just hope that other operating systems such as Firefox OS, Ubuntu Phone OS etc come up with some innovative ideas so that we will have some options left. Comment below with your thoughts on this.
