With the clock counting down until Apple’s announcement we thought we’d give you a quick round-up of the alleged new features that will be coming with the iPhone 5S.
Built-in fingerprint scanner
When Apple kicks out a “S” iPhone upgrade, the usual commodities that get upgraded are the camera and the processor, but with the iPhone 5S, we might see a very radical new feature. This new feature could turn out to be a fingerprint scanner built into the home button. The apparant main use of the scanner may be to enable a user to easily unlock their device but it could also be used to make payments with in the future.
The new home key is even said to allegedly be covered in sapphire instead of the usual covering of glass. Apple purchased the biometric security firm, AuthenTec, last year, adding more fuel to the rumours.
A 12MP camera with dual LED flash
Another big upgrade on the iPhone 5S will come with the phones snapper. The general consensus is that the iPhone 5’s camera will come with dual LED flash and a wider f/2.0 aperture for better low-light performance.
There is a slight chance that the camera will receive a megapixel upgrade, going from 8MP to 12MP but some say that Apple may decide that 8MP does the job just fine. The very latest leaked specs seem to confirm that the camera will remain at 8MP.
For those wanting to channel their inner-Matrix, Apple may also be including slow-mo video recording at 120 frames per second.
In addition to the rear camera upgrades, the front-facing camera is said to be getting an upgrade to 2MP from it’s current 1.2MP on the iPhone 5.
New Apple A7 chip with 1GB of RAM
The iPhone 5S is expected to ship with a brand new processor, the Apple A7, an upgrade from the A6 chip that reasides inside the iPhone 5.
The A7 chip is a dual core 32nm chip made by Samsung using the Higk-K Metal Gate technology. It features a clock speed of 1.5GHz, PowerVR SGX 544MP4 graphics and 1GB of RAM. The type of RAM being used thought has allegedly changed, with Apple said to be using the LPDDR3-1333 RAM as opposed to last year’s 1GB LPDDR2-1066 RAM. This means that memory bandwidth will be higher, jumping from 8.5GB/s to 10.7GB/s.
NFC – Near Field Communications
NFC is a technology mostly associated with cashless payments. The system is said to be the technology of the future where people will use their phone to pay for everyday items. Most phone makers adopted NFC but Apple did not. However, this could all change with the iPhone 5S potentially becoming the first iPhone to come with NFC built in.
A 128GB iPhone?
The iPhone currently comes with three storage options – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The iPhone 5S may add a fourth storage option to the lineup with a huge 128GB of internal storage. If you’re a person who likes to use a lot of phone storage, this is the one for you. This is also good news for Apple however, larger capacity models mean more money for the Cupertino company.
A gold..sorry, champagne iPhone 5S
Over the years, we’ve had to make do with just two color options for the iPhone – black and white. However, this year the iPhone 5S may just introduce a third color, and that color is gold. However, it said to be called Champagne and not ‘gold’
