The aim was always to get Ubuntu Touch ready for smartphone use as part of the Ubuntu 13.10 update, and it looks like that aim is right on track. Canonical has confirmed that the software will be ready for use when Ubuntu 13.10 is released on October 17th.
However, this doesn’t mean that we will be seeing actual phones on the market next month. You will need a compatible device to be able to install the software, and the only compatible devices right now are the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 4. Support for tablets is expected in April when Ubuntu 14.04 is set to be released. However, that hasn’t stopped the community added some unofficial support for a few dozen devices.
Ubuntu Touch isn’t expected to be seen on retail hardware until January 2014 at the earliest.
