Yep, you’ve read the title correctly. An unlocked gold iPhone 5S has been sold on eBay for the princely sum of $10,100. The phones themselves are not made of real gold, so we’re led to assume that lack of availability pushed the price up.
eBay is currently full of iPhone 5S models and one seller is seeking $4600 for bundle of three iPhone’s, all of them in gold. The problem stems from the fact that there is a shortage of Apple iPhone 5S units, in particular the gold model is in very short supply. The apparent reason for the shortage is low yeilds of certain parts from suppliers, including a chip for Touch ID and a camera lens module. In addition to low yields, Apple did not expect such high demand for the gold coloured iPhone. Apple have announced that they will be increasing production of the gold iPhone by 33%.
