Bloomberg have today reported that Microsoft will be putting in place a 70% discount on the price of Windows 8.1 for inexpensive devices.
The report says that device makers will be charged $15 “to license Windows 8.1 and pre-install it on devices that retail for less than $250, instead of the usual fee of $50,”. A similar report came out from Asia last year but that particular report cited some size and device-type restrictions. Bloomberg say that this will no longer apply.
People are seeing this drop as Microsoft’s challenge to rise to the level of Google and their low-cost Chromebooks (retailing from less than $200 to around $300) which have been a popular purchase for schools. Only time will tell if this license fee drop will make a difference to Microsoft’s efforts.
