Nikon is going to reclaim the lost glory of the point and shoot cameras. For most people point and shoot cameras stand between smartphones and for those who wants something more it is a mirrorless shooter, but we think Nikon is going to change that with the release of Nikon’s new DL range.
The new DL has a 20-megapixel 1-inch sensor which is similar to Nikon’s other mirrorless cameras. The sensor is certainly much smaller than the Micro Four-Thirds and APS-C sensors, these sensors are generally found in mirrorless cameras and in cheap DSLR’s, but they are certainly big enough to outclass the smartphone sensors. A sensor is one of the most important parts of a camera and a bigger sensor means more light, and that leads to more crisp details and superb low light captures. Overall the performance of the camera is greatly influenced by sensors.
There are mainly three different types of DL lens in the market, one with 24-85mm zoom, another one comes with 18-50 mm wide angle zoom and the last one has the super zoom of 24-500mm. In picture it looks good but in real it looks even better: f/1.8-2.8 for the 24-85 and 18-50, and f/2.8-5.6 for the super zoom. They are attached to 1-inch sensors and because of that in almost any situation, they are able to produce clear photographs.
Besides sensors, there are many other important parts in a camera, and they have to be good enough otherwise photographers won’t be interested in the camera. The camera can capture 4K video, has a hybrid autofocus and a 20fps burst shoot which will put any other mirrorless camera obsolete. There is also a 1200fps slow motion. Other than all the other parts the camera is equipped with an OLED touch screen and a hot shoe so that you can attach an extra electronic viewfinder. The camera has complete manual controls. It is safe to say that this may be the best camera made by Nikon that can easily fit in your pocket.
It is unfortunate that the camera is little too pricey, the DL24-85 costs $650, the DL18-50 costs $850 and the DL24-500 costs $1000. The prices of these cameras are big drawbacks, as there are other excellent point and shoot cameras in the market which are less pricey like Sony RX100, but is it better? To find that we have to wait for it.
Either way, it is a great camera by Nikon and every photographer will like it if we keep the price aside.
