Samsung finally announced Galaxy S5 at the Unpacked 5 press event at MWC Barcelona. I am very sorry to break the ice for you right on the start, Galaxy S5 is not impressive and is almost identical to their previous flagship device Galaxy S4 with a very few exceptions. Samsung had previously revealed that the lower than expected sales for the Galaxy S4 was because of the similarity in design with Galaxy S3. And now it seems like although they knew the reason, they didn’t do anything about it. Also previous rumors had suggested that Samsung is planning to launch different versions of Galaxy S4, but according to the latest reports there will be only one.
When it comes to the look the only major differences are the size of the device and the removable back cover on Galaxy S5. The brushed plastic back has been replaced with a “perforated” golf ball pattern back cover. This doesn’t look better and reports from from various sources who have been there at the unveiling event say it doesn’t look any better than the images. Then there is this fingerprint scanner is not so obvious and is hidden behind the home screen.
When coming to the hardware front, Galaxy S4 is coming with a fingerprint scanner and a heartbeat reader. The fingerprint scanner can not be seen like previously mentioned and you will have to swipe down the scanner for authentication. The scanner uses swipe implementation and is said to be pretty quick. But considering you need to swipe down to use it, the scanner is easy to miss needing you to try again. Anyway Samsung has an SDK for the fingerprint scanner which means you will soon see apps which can directly interact with the scanner, which is a good thing in my opinion. Out of the box the scanner can be used to unlock the phone and unlock the apps which are already locked. The heartbeat reader is on the back and you can see it near to the LED flash. To use it you just have to hold a finger pressing on the sensor and it will read your heartbeat. If you don’t have a heart rate monitor gadgets, you may use this feature on the phone, but the question is how often you will use it. For me it looks like a feature which is good for a show off but not that useful.
When it comes down to the camera, you will be impressed with the new feature it has – the Hybrid auto focus system. This helps the camera to focus much faster and spend little time on focusing. This is a DSLR like feature and sure is impressive. According to several reports, the auto focus was very fast at the press event when tested. But considering it is a press event and the lighting would be extra-ordinary we will have to wait until the device gets reviewed to measure the real performance. Other than the above mentioned features it supports micorUSD 3.0 and is water resistant although you will need to cover up the bottom flappy port of Galaxy S5 before trying out the water resistance.
