Microsoft finally announced Cortana the virtual assistant at their BUILD conference yesterday. They have given an idea about the whole lot of new features which Windows Phone 8.1 brings to you as well. Here is what you need to know about both the Windows Phone 8.1 and Cortana.

First of all Windows Phone 8.1 will bring the 3 column layout for all the phones and devices which was previously limited to a particular set of devices especially with larger screens. the layout was much appraised and Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to take it to all the devices. Along with the 3 column layout Microsoft has added an option to set your custom favorite wallpaper to the start screen instead of some preset wallpapers.

Another new features is the action center which imitates the notification bar of Android. You can swipe down from the top to see the action center which will show you the latest notifications along with some control like Android gives you. The Action center will be accessible even when the phone is locked.

Now when it comes to Cortana we must say what Microsoft has achieved is really impressive. For one thing Cortana is powered by Bing an access to all the data Bing has on its fingertip. Then there is this notebook feature which shows what Cortana knows about you and it even lets you edit the information over there to change Cortana’s behavior. There are a lot of other features too when ti comes to Cortana. We will cover all of them with much details soon.

Another new features is Data sense which will track your data usage and connects to WiFI when wifi is available and your data usage is more from cellular network. Then there is WiFi Sense which will connect to good quality free WiFi hotpots when found in range. Another nifty feature which was not availble previously is storage sense. This will let you move apps, music etc between sdcard and internal memory.

The all new redesigned calendar, a better keyboard which in fact holds the fastest text entry on a smartphone, ability syncing data between phone and pc on IE11 etc are to name a few other new features which comes with Windows Phone 8.1.
